The HAPPENING week!

It had been an eventful week, a week filled with joy and celebration, starting with the Public Service Week (PSW) Observance Ceremony at CS College and later Graduation 2012 back at school and my unit’s event at CS Club. I am glad that all things went well, and now I am officially a proud graduate of Temasek Polytechnic J

A recap of the events of the week:
1)   Public Service Week Observance Ceremony (23 May 2012)
I am privileged to be able to commemorate this occasion with my fellow colleagues from PSD; the event had been a meaningful one as I took the chance to actually reflect upon the content of the speech, in relation to the projects I am working on. It is a great feeling to serve, and impacting others in a positive way. Maybe that is how satisfaction is derived in this industry. J

Of course, I also had lots of fun with my fellow interns. Decided to take up the responsibility of an official photographer and put my camera to good use! J (Really loved those backdrops heh!)

2)   Graduation – Class of 2012 (24 May 2012)

It is the day everyone had been looking forward to, and finally this day has come, each of us waking up to a brand new morning where we would step into school as a student but leaving a graduate. It was both surreal and magical.

And since Graduation 2012 would definitely deserve a post on its own, please do check out my thoughts as fresh graduate here.

3)   Event @ CS Club (25 May 2012)
Last but not least, I ended my week with my unit’s event at CS Club. Was really glad to be back on familiar grounds - Event Management again. Although it was of a different nature, I was really happy to be planning events again J

On the overall, it was great that the event went well, and I had the opportunity to know who the people I usually email are, and how they look like. (I like to be able to link the name to the face, although my pairing skills ain’t that fantastic). Took many photos again to document my internship experience :P

And of course, not to forget, I had a wonderful time making macaroons for the afternoon activity. AND IT TASTED GOOD! (ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!)

And yes, that concludes my happening week! Definitely had lots of fun and ready to take on the greater things that are awaiting me!

That’s all for now!

See ya! :)

Officially a TP Graduate

Date: 24 May 2012
Status: Graduate, Diploma in Business, Temasek Polytechnic

3 years came and passed with a blink of an eye. It felt like it was just yesterday that we were gathered at the TCC for our Freshmen Orientation and now today, we are gathered here once again, this time to celebrate our graduation. This feeling is so surreal and magical. The hard work, all the late nights, the blood, sweat and tears from the past 3 years had finally materialised and translated into what we have achieved today, making all that we have gone through worthwhile, no less.

I am finally graduating, with the bonus of being conferred the top of the Class of 2012, Diploma in Business. Even now as I pen (type) this down, it still feels really impossible, for there are still people out there who are equally deserving of this honour. Never did I expect this. I have achieved my goal to make it into a local university, and this medal is a bonus, as a testimony for the hard work I have gone through, a reminder of the relationships forged, memories created and lessons learnt during the past 3 years.

I am thankful for this honour, and most definitely grateful for the support that all of you have given me to help me, and of course, the lessons and skills you all had taught me, that helped me overcome all challenges to become a better and stronger person today. Thank you to my family and friends for your utmost support. And of course, not to forget, special thanks to my lecturers, my tutors, my friends and acquaintances who I have crossed paths with in the past 3 years for making this journey a wonderful and meaningful one :) .

GRADUATION DAY :)
______________________________________________________________________________________
"It is good to see you again" - was the first sentence Mr Yeo said to me as I reached the centre of the stage. It was a wonderful coincidence that the CEO of my SIP company was gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour, and would be the one to present me with my diploma and the medal. It was just 6 months ago that he presented me with my 'End of Internship' gift and now 6 months later, he would be the one to present me with my diploma.

What a coincidence! Although I have to admit that it was quite a jaw drop moment when I saw the director of my SIP company walking into TCC and later the CEO coming in as part of the academic procession. And I did not even know anything about this at all! 5 minutes before the academic procession came in, I was in the middle of a WhatsApp conversation with my colleague about something else before it diverted over to the topic of graduation, and went something like this:
Me: The company is sponsoring some prizes, any idea if anyone is coming down as a corporate guest?
Colleague: I think CEO & Director is coming down, heard them speaking about it...
Me: Are you serious?!
(Academic Procession walks in)
Me: OMG, YOU ARE RIGHT! And he is the guest of honour!!!!!!
What an epic moment, I was really shocked but at the same time I liked how it actually turned out. It is quite meaningful for someone you have been working with to hand you the Diploma, in the capacity of the Guest of Honour. Such coincidences don't happen that often, and I have to treasure it :) From a STADA Scholar in Year 2 to a STADA Intern in Year 3, and now, to receive my awards and diploma from the CEO of STADA, wow, that is quite a feat! Affinity perhaps? :)

With Mr Boo (Principal & CEO of TP), Mr Yeo (CEO of STADA) and Catherina (Director of STADA)

A TP Graduate, A brand new journey..
There is so much I wish to say, but only that much I could type here.

This 3 years had been wonderful, and it is a milestone which I would never forget. We have done it. We have emerged as survivors of the Polytechnic Education System. Good times, bad times, the ups and downs, we have managed to overcome all those challenges, and become champions in our own way.

As we go our separate ways and move on for greater things ahead, I hope that we will all continue to stay in touch, maintaining the relationships we forged, and continue to create new memories as we move on. Thank you to all of you for being a part of my life, and may I encourage you to continue to pursue your interest, and seize every opportunity that comes your way. Thank you for being a part of my journey in TP, and hope to see you soon! :)

Believe that you can, and you will achieve. I have made it, and am ready for the greater things that await my discovery :) .

Pre-Graduation Thoughts

I am feeling a mix of excitement-anxiousness-sense of gratitude now. The time has come, we will finally be graduating officially tomorrow, saying goodbye at the place we first met for our school orientation, stepping out of the school compounds as a freshly minted TP graduate.

The past 3 years had been a meaningful one. I am thankful for all the great friends and memories TP had given me, as well as the opportunities I was given to further my potential. Thank you to everyone whom I have crossed paths with during the past 3 years, thanks for bearing with me and pointing out things to help me grow and learn. It had been quite a ride, thank you (especially to my group mates) for making this journey much more enjoyable and meaningful.

Thank you for everything and Happy Graduation Everyone :)

MARCH Fun!

It's already mid-April and here I am trying to write a post on the happenings in March. Well, better late than never I say.

March was kind of like the start to the new phase of life - Post (Unofficial) Graduation. As much as I am looking forward to starting this next phase of life, there was this degree of apprehension, about the choices I have to make and what I am going into.

I guess I am really blessed that somehow everything flowed into plan, starting from the decision to take part in HRYF2012 for the second time and the last minute application for Internships@Gov. A matter of fact, I expected neither. I expected myself to slowly find a HR-related temporary position, while enjoying my new found freedom with gatherings and meet-ups. Competition, and another internship, honestly I did not expect it at all.

Things happen for a reason, and I am glad for how things went (especially when I really loved how everything is pre-planned and there is no time wasting :) )

And yes, moving on to what happened in March.

1) Celebration of Learning 2012
To mark our unofficial graduation, our B.I.G. Juniors organised the Celebration of Learning for our batch. I vaguely remembered how we were doing the same for our seniors the year before, and how fast time flies, it is now our turn to sit in the audience to enjoy this 'informal graduation' event they prepared for us.

There were performances by the juniors and the seniors :)

And of course, the presentation of the SIP Certificates and the usual group photos.

2) HRYF 2012

Participated in the HRYF 2012 with the same team as last year's. I'd say we are back for more, having enjoyed the last run. Personally, I felt that this year's HRYF was more challenging, with more emphasis being placed on the case competition which is usually the core of the forum. Plus, there were really strong teams this year bringing about a higher level of stress, but at the same time a greater motivation to perform.

Of course, more emphasis on the case competition implies that we could practice our already rusty HR PBL skills! No HR modules in the past semesters and our HR knowledge and our technique of doing PBL was kind of fading away, so it was definitely a refresh for us seniors.

Preparations

Quest 1 Briefing!

Seniors' Team's Presentation - Xiu Wei, Clara and Ruth

Juniors!

Chin Yi and I doing presentation for Quest 2!

Judges at work!

Prof doing a round-up on both presentations

Unbelievably, we came in 2nd in the Polytechnic Category! 2nd time at the forum and coming in 2nd place! It was a pleasant surprise especially with the quality of teams and the change in competition format this year. I guess our presentation in Quest 2 really made the difference :)

3) Internships @ PSD, PMO

The building where my office is located

In mid-March, I started work at the most unexpected place, doing the most unexpected job. Honestly, I did not expect myself to start on another internship, especially not in the public sector, I thought I will end up with a temporary HR job somewhere in the private sector. Well, I guess things happen for a reason, and somehow I still ended up in the Public Sector. It is quite amazing how things turned out, from overlooking 2 invitations, to receiving the reminder phone call, and deciding to apply 3 days before the closing date and later, the interview session the day before my exams started and lastly, landing the position on the same day!

And wow, the process was really smooth for something this unexpected, all within a week if I didn't recall wrongly! The job scope was somewhat related to HR, so I was still on familiar turfs :) It feels good to have a job offer waiting before exams commenced, so the degree of anxiety from completing a part of my education journey was not as bad. I had 'something' and not completely nothing to do :) Although there are still many of those 'it's the deciding factor' decisions to be made :/

So what made me eventually decide to go on a Public Service Internship?

1) I needed a job.
I knew I would probably go look for a temporary job to gain more experience and kill time till university starts in August. So I thought, I can just try this. After all, it is all or nothing, if I don't get this, I can easily go on a job search for another job. And if I get it (like how it happened), it will be a bonus, no need to do a job search :)

2) There was something related to HR.
As you might know, my area of interests lies in HR and Events Management, and since my previous internship was in relation to the latter, I would prefer to try out something in HR. I need to check if I can last in a HR position before I make a wrong decision in selecting my majors at the university level!

So I was glad to find a few HR positions in the list of available positions, by which 2 of them really interests me. So I applied for those along with an events management position (not conference related). Truthfully, the job descriptions listed on the portal was really interesting. I mean, who knew an intern can be up to all these! (Well, never underestimate an intern? Hahah!)

3) Experience in the Public Sector sounds good.
It is probably not easy to get a temporary job with all the competition out there, and opportunities only knocks once (In fact, this opportunity knocked thrice! since I overlooked the first 2 invitation!). I guess 3 reminders ought to mean something. And plus, there was no harm trying it out, eventually, it is all for gaining more experience in the working world.

Prior to this internship, I had a 1-week stint at a statutory board, and that wasn't too bad to deter me from trying out another job in this sector. And since people around me had been encouraging me to go for it, so why not? At least the job scope was something I was passionate about and interested in. So yes, I can do this!

I was really glad to be shortlisted for the interview (especially when I applied real late!) and eventually getting and accepting the offer, marking my first foray into the Civil Service ;D

The only downside, my office has no cubicles. I have been trying to see if I can get a job that involves working in cubicles since I have never done it before. But attempt failed :( Maybe that it is sort of a good thing since the people I 'complained' to about this to told me working in cubicles is really boring. So maybe, I ought to be thankful and appreciate the benefits and convenience of a open-style office :)

Odd thing #2! I have never worked in the private sector before. Just the public sector and non profit sector after excluding those ad-hoc event jobs where I never did work in the company for more than a week. And now it is public sector again, so I guess next job I will try for the private sector?

Anyhow, I like my experiences being unique and different like this :) I really appreciate the varying nature of my job scope, and the fact that I will be kept busy with this dual role. Work has been so far so good, and I am managing the load well. I can't disclose what exactly I am doing because I have to abide by Official Secrets Act, but I can say that I'm blessed with a wonderful working environment, fantastic colleagues and interesting job scope. So, I will try to have fun and learn and absorb as much from this stint as possible :)

This job will probably keep me occupied till mid-June? Shall start thinking and planning about what to do during the short break in between post-internship and pre-orientation :) Planning ahead is always good :)

Meanwhile, coming up in the remainder of April and later May:
1) Senior's Gathering (That's tomorrow, will be joining them for dinner since I will be at work in the day!)
2) Graduation! Finally our turn to graduate in the 'Harry Potter' robes haha!
3) Some events at work (Can't disclose again, but hopefully it will be good and enriching :) )

That's all from me this time!

Till next time!

See ya! :)

3 Years in TP

3 Years of Polytechnic Life,
From Freshman to Junior to Senior and to Graduand,
From 1B19 to 2B13 to 3B11,
From BSGIG to BIG
It was a good 3 years.

Receiving a Polytechnic Education was one decision that I never regretted making. At that time, it was probably unusual for TK girls to choose the poly route and even more rare for people who could qualify for JC to make such a decision. So much so that I got questioned umpteen times about this, by relatives, friends, classmates and teachers alike. However, I never doubted my choice, and maintained that this is the right, and indeed, it proved to be :) It was an education suitable for me, relevant and experiential.

These 3 years had not been easy. There were ups and downs, unexpected and negative things happen, and I learnt through the hard way how to cope with them. I tried as much as possible to strike a balance, well, I guess, I managed to do it to a certain extent and I am glad for that.

3 years in TP taught me things I never expected to learn, allowed me to see things from different perspectives and gave me numerous opportunities to further develop my potential. It gave me an experience that I would never get out of a JC life (To be honest, I wondered what would happen if I went for JC?). I met many great people and forged new bonds with them, bonds that I will keep and maintain. These 3 years worth of memories is something I would never forget, and the lessons learnt is what I will bring with me on my next endeavour. I am really grateful to all the people who had the confidence in me, trusted me, encouraged me and simply just supported me. All of you impacted me, making me what I have become.

Thank you TP, for all the memories you have given me. And thank you, my friends for creating those memories. Keep in touch!

Now, I will let the pictures do the talking (:
